PEI Plastic injection molding process parameters

Drying treatment: Polyetherimide is short name is PEI, PEI has hygroscopic properties and can lead to material degradation. The required humidity value should be less than 0.02%. Drying conditions of 150 ° C for 4 hours are recommended.

Melting temperature: 340-400 ° C for common type materials and 340-415 ° C for enhanced type materials.

Mold temperature: 107 ~ 175 ° C, the recommended mold temperature is 140 ° C.

Injection pressure: 700 ~ 1500bar.

Injection speed: Use the highest possible injection speed.

Machine selection: PEI* resin can be injection molded on most standard injection molding machines. A reciprocating screw injection molding machine is recommended. The two basic factors that should be considered when determining the size of the equipment used to inject a particular PEI* resin part are the total injection weight and total projected area.

   The best results are generally obtained when the total shot volume (all cavities plus runners and gates) is equal to 30 to 80% of the machine capacity. When using a large barrel, if the injection volume is too small, the resin residence time may be unnecessarily extended. If it is necessary to perform injection molding at a higher temperature within a suitable temperature range, reducing the likelihood of thermal degradation of the material typically requires a reduction in residence time. Therefore, in order to achieve higher temperature injection molding requirements, it is recommended that the minimum injection size should also be greater than 60% of the machine capacity.

   After determining the total projected area of the full injection (all cavities plus the flow path area subject to the injection pressure), a clamping force of 4 to 6 tons per square inch of projected area should be provided to reduce component flash. Glass reinforced resins may require a slightly higher clamping force (an estimated one ton of clamping force per square inch). Wall thickness, process length and injection molding conditions determine the actual clamping force tonnage required.

Barrel selection and screw design considerations:

   When processing PEI* resins, it is usually possible to use conventionally manufactured materials that are compatible with day-to-day screws and barrels. A bimetallic barrel is recommended.

Depending on the diameter of the screw, it is preferred to have an aspect ratio of 20:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1. In addition, it is also recommended to use a short feed zone (5 segments) and a long compression zone (11 segments) while gradually transitioning to a shorter metering zone (4 segments) with a constant taper. Compression should be done on a gradual transition of constant taper, as sharp changes can result in excessive shear forces and material degradation. If a specific screw cannot be selected, a universal screw with an aspect ratio of 16:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 1.5:1 to 3.0:1 has been proven to be successful. It is not recommended to use a barrel with a vent to process PEI* resin. The check valve should be of the sliding check ring type. In the screw metering area, the flow gap usually accounts for at least 80% of the cross section of the flow area.
