The general rule for the correct choice of plastic injection mold tooling steel


  In actual work, the selection of steel is generally divided into two cases, either specified by the customer or selected by the customer.


   The customer can't say this. According to his request, it is worth noting that the customer specifies the steel. Under normal circumstances, it cannot be exchanged arbitrarily. Even if it is impossible to purchase, the customer should first communicate with the customer and obtain the customer's consent.


    Because as a mold supplier, it is sometimes difficult to judge the appearance of the product that matches the product. If the two products are made of unused steel, then if the product has surface treatment (such as etch, it will make it inconsistent). To make the difference between the appearance of the two products larger. At this time, it is fundamentally difficult to solve.


   In most cases, the mold materials are generally referred to as glue-related molded parts. For example, mold cores, inserts, sliders, slanted tops, etc. Among these components, the matrix material is the most important. Other parts depending on the actual situation of the mold, other materials can be used for the unimportant molding position.


   Then as a mold supplier, or mold designer, the whole set of mold materials, should have a bottom. According to the actual situation, in the face of material conflicts with time, it should be able to judge the substitutability of materials.


Before talking about materials, look at two names, pre-hardened steel and hardened steel.


    Pre-hardened steel has a certain hardness when it leaves the factory. The hardness is generally not very high, easy to cut, can be directly processed into a mold, generally does not require heat treatment. In order to increase the surface hardness, a nitriding treatment can be performed.


   Hardened steel and hardened steel generally need to be heat treated before use. The hardness before heat treatment is low, easy to cut, and after heat treatment, it is difficult to process due to high hardness. Therefore, the conventional practice of hardening steel is to first open the coarse, process the water hole, and then heat the hole after the screw hole. After the heat treatment is returned, the finishing is performed.


   Many times, we see some steel with H behind, such as 718H, P20H, etc., H is the abbreviation of Hard, representing hardness, one more H, that is, harder. For example, 718HH is harder than 718H.


To understand the selection of materials, first look at the general information of commonly used steel.


Common steel properties of molds:


  Medium carbon steel: The most used medium carbon steel for molds is 45#, 50#, which is a category, different numbers are different, but their performance is not much different. Because different country's numbering standards are different, it has S45C. , S50C and so on. What we have to know is that they are actually the same category, but different countries have different numbers.


   The hardness of 45# steel is about HRC20. The hardness of the material is low, the toughness is good, and it is easy to rust. When it is used as a component on the mold, heat treatment is generally not required. When used as a low-end mold steel, it can be quenched and tempered, and the hardness after quenching and tempering is about HRC42~46. Generally, it is not recommended that the hardness is greater than HRC50, otherwise it will be brittle. It is often used for auxiliary parts such as formwork, support, and limit posts.


   P20: P20 originated from the United States. It is called the United States. It is quite mixed in the country. There are many kinds of grades. It can be seen that P20 belongs to a large category, and there are many kinds of materials. Common ones are: P20, 1.2311, 1.2312, 618, 718, 718H, etc. P20, which is often referred to in our spoken language, refers to P20 in P20 steel. The material belongs to pre-hardened steel, and its cutting performance and polishing performance are not bad. It is generally used for large mold back molds that are not required to be high. For similar materials, the front mold with higher polishing requirements is generally used 718H. Or for non-molded parts on the mold, that is, parts without glue position, such as shovel base, slider seat, etc. P20 factory hardness is about 30~36 HRC


   718, 718H, 718HH: 718 materials are basically pre-hardened state, it is improved on the P20, it belongs to the P20 class, but it is better than the P20 material. The hardness of 718H is higher than that of 718. When the mold is used with 718H, the 718HH is higher than 718H. Similar to it is Germany's 1.2738, but the composition of the two is slightly different, 1.2738 toughness is better than 718, and the strength and wear resistance of 718 is better than 1.2738. The material has good processing properties, polishing properties, wear resistance, etc., and is generally used for mold materials of large molds. Or used for inclined top, slider, etc. The hardness of .718H is about HRC33~38. The hardness of 718HH is about HRC36~40.


   NAK80: Compared with 718H, this material should be harder, its polishing performance is better, and the etching effect is better. The general industry believes that it can be used on mirror products, but it can be understood that as long as it is not a demanding mirror product, it can be used.

However, the material is not resistant to corrosion and rusts, so it is not suitable for producing corrosive plastics. Otherwise, it will become awkward after a long time of production. The material is mainly used for high precision, high polishing requirements and good surface etching effect. The material is pre-hardened and does not require heat treatment. It is generally used for molded parts such as mold cores, inserts, and sliders. The hardness of NAK80 is about 38~42 in HRC.


   S136: S136 and NAK80 should be placed in the same place. The biggest feature of this material is wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Products for high mirror requirements, such as cameras, glasses, etc. Although the NAK80 can also be used as a mirror product, the S136 is superior to the polishing property. After the mold is produced for a long time, it can maintain the original high light state. Similar to the characteristics of the S136 is 1.2316, the corrosion resistance of this material is better than the S136. It can be understood that if the degree of polishing is emphasized, S136 should be selected; if corrosion resistance is emphasized, 1.2316 should be selected. S136 is generally used for molded parts such as mold cores, inserts, and sliders. The material is a hardened material, and the hardness after heat treatment is about 48 to 52 HRC.


   S136H: The difference between this and S136 is that one is a pre-hard material and the other is a hard material. From the perspective of the mold, the S136H processing cycle and cost are smaller. But from a production perspective, the S136 is more durable. Therefore, the amount is large with S136. The amount is not much used for S136H. The factory hardness of S136H is about 30~36HRC.


   H13: This material is mostly used on the small mold of the small product. It has high strength and hardness and good toughness. The same type is SKD61, 8407, 1.2344. Generally, they are almost the same. The toughness after 8407 quenching is better than that of H13. The ejector pins of the SKD61 mold are often used. The material is mostly used as a mold for the mold or insert, and is used for some wearable parts on the mold or a mold with a high glass fiber content. After heat treatment, the hardness is about 48~52 HRC.


How to choose the right material?


   The main factors affecting the selection of molds are production, customer expectations, and price. On many low-end, low-priced molds, many use 45# steel to adjust the quality. Therefore, the low-end mold basically ignores other factors.


   Excluding the low-end mold, according to the normal idea, from the perspective of the mold, the selection of the mold should first consider whether the plastic is corrosive, whether the product has mirror polishing, etched requirements, and wear characteristics of the mold parts. On this basis, consider the mass production level of the mold.


   When starting to report the price of molds, many customers are specifying materials. Unless they are particularly unreasonable, this is generally in line with the wishes of customers.


   If the customer does not specify, the customer should first communicate with the customer to determine the use of the material, and then report the mold price. Here, we need to make a basic judgment on the materials used, which are summarized as follows:


   Low-end low-cost mode, using 45# or P20.


   High-priced mold, high-mirror surface requires S136, corrosive strength is 1.2316


    Non-corrosive with NAK80 or 718H


   Hard molds are more commonly used 8407, H13, 1.2344.


   For materials with high quality and precision requirements, materials with good wear resistance and hardness are selected.


   There are still many people who are divided according to the output of the mold. In fact, I personally think that in addition to the test mold, the low-end low-volume production mold (generally refers to the mold within 300,000 times), the production factor should not be too large, the real high-quality product. When the mold is produced 500,000 times and no production, the quality of the product is definitely different. Just a question of acceptance. The molds in this segment have basically reached a certain level of materials. After reaching this level, the ratio of material to output will not be too large.


   For example, the NAK80 molds are generally not more than 500,000 times. This is the industry's peer tax law. Of course, the mold made by NAK80, in addition to the structural risk of the mold itself, except for the processing factors, is also affected by the structure of the product.
