PA66 applications in auto parts


  Automotive plasticization is a major development trend in today's international automotive industry. The current automotive market demand has shifted to lighter-weight sport utility vehicles, minivans and other light vehicles, which will drive the development of automotive materials to a lighter weight. At present, 10 to 25% of spare parts for passenger cars are plastic parts, of which nylon plastic is the big brother. This is clear to all colleagues in the automotive industry.


  The fiery development of the automotive industry has also driven nylon for automotive parts. For example, the nylon PA66, which is the most used car accessory in the automotive industry, is a typical example. The nylon PA66 for automotive parts is a semi-crystalline-crystalline material, even in comparison. It maintains high strength and stiffness under high temperature conditions and is the highest mechanical strength of all PA series. It has excellent wear resistance and self-lubricating properties. Moreover, it is also resistant to acids, bases, and more inorganic aqueous solutions. However, since the nylon PA66 for automobile parts is easy to absorb water, it is also easily soluble in polar solvents such as phenol and formic acid, so the dimensional stability is poor, and this is also a disadvantage that needs to be overcome in application.


  The nylon PA66 for automotive parts is widely used in the automotive industry. In fact, there are two main reasons. On the one hand, the nylon PA66 for automotive parts has a high degree of crystallinity, which in turn determines its rigidity and heat resistance to be superior to other engineering materials. On the other hand, nylon PA66, which is used for auto parts, has strong plasticity and high mechanical strength, and meets the material selection criteria for products that require impact resistance and high strength.


   Nylon is commonly used in the following automotive accessories: hood, rocker cover, cooling heater and fuel tank. Nylon resins used in these aspects are reinforced with 20-40% of glass or other mineral fibers to increase strength. It is also possible to treat the nylon resin by a special chemical method to weaken the disadvantages such as hydrolysis and oxidation, and to enhance the advantages in heat resistance.


1, heating and cooling system

  Glass-mineral reinforced nylon can be used to produce fan blades, fan shrouds, radiator tanks, heat exchangers, water vaporizers, hot-water control valves, and thermostat housings. The advantages of nylon in this field are its thermal stability, high hardness, low thermal deformation and wear resistance. The glass fiber reinforced PA66 plastic material can also be used as an electronic throttling controller housing - a component that provides the number of components for the acceleration/deceleration signal based on the pedal position.


2, Automobile gearbox cover 


Rocker caps used to protect sealed engine valves have traditionally been fabricated from aluminum or thermoset plastics such as molded vinyl esters. The PA66 plastic material used to produce the rocker cover (reinforced with fiberglass or glass-mineral fiber) with high hardness, oil and chemical resistance, good dimensional stability and low thermal deformation. Reinforced nylon 6 can also be used in the manufacture of rocker panels. Nylon 6 grades offer higher strength and stiffness than PA66 plastics, and are also easier to mold due to their good flow stability at a given temperature.


3, intake valve box

Many automakers have replaced the original aluminum airbox valve with a PA66 plastic feedbox valve. According to industry analysis, replacing aluminum with nylon can reduce production costs by 30% and reduce weight by 50%. Cost reduction can be further reduced through component integration. The nylon used in the general air box valve is 30 to 35% glass fiber reinforced PA6 and PA66 plastic materials.


4, the hood

 The appearance of the hood is important, and the PA66 plastic material gives the product a good surface, so nylon is very suitable for this application. At the same time, nylon can also be obtained with colored molded parts, thus avoiding expensive paint steps. Some of the reinforced modified products are very suitable for hood manufacturing nylon varieties have been applied. These nylon varieties are reported to have advantages such as high strength, good appearance, low injection molding pressure and less trim.
